1 March 2011

After being away from home for a week at Conference there really is nothing like home.

Home means so many things, sometimes at the same time. But right now I specifically mean the place where, at the end of every day I come for shelter amd protection from the outside. No one is perfect, myself included but home is where ythat fact doesn't matter. Where being me is good enough.

Of course, now that Conference is over I want to head to the other home (the one where those who I grew up with live). Although where my family live now isn't my childhood home it is still the only place we all call home which means something now we have partners, children, pets and careers. Can't wait to see them!

I was on Facebook yesterday and someone had a photo of a Coke Spider (also known as a coke float). It reminded me of summers as a kid when my Nanna would make them for us.

Obviously people had commented and one genius had a tip for how to avoid the froth that happens when you put the ice cream. Its genius in its simplicity - pour in the coke, put in a couple of ice cubes and then but the ice cream on the floating platform that the ice cubes create. Genius!!! Of course I had to test it and it totally works ... now to resist making one everyday.

How awesome is the potential of social media. Ok getting the perfect coke spider isn't that impressive in the grand scheme of life but its an example of what we can do when we communicate people, even people we don't know, through social media. Exciting times we live in, very exciting.

I have noticed, as I grow older, that for me to be a great film it has to have an incredible score. One that I can listen to again and again after seeing the film and that invokes the spirit of the film.

This morning as I work I am listening to the score for How to Train Your Dragon. Yes it is technically a kids film but everytime I watch the movie I am impressed by the story and the animation.

I am a fan of all things Nordic really. My Dad is definitely descended from vikings (the Scottish ones) and my partners family are German so its interesting. Wish I knew more really.

Next time you are watching something take a moment to appreciate the score. You will be glad you did.

Got distracted slightly but anyway - I am glad that we live in a world where having scores available isn't hard. Also that so much effort goes into them. The score for Doctor Who is incredible (by far the best I have ever heard). Composed by Murray Gold, conducted by Ben Foster and played by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales it is just amazing. I honestly believe without that score the series wouldn't have been as successful as it is. Not putting down the performances by those on stage but the score adds an additional layer to the emotional resonance of what they do. Just incredible.

I was catching up on blogs over on Google Reader and saw this amazing photo shoot on A Diary of Lovely

To me the model looks unbelievably sexy and its a reminder that the classics (tight black dress, great legs and red lippy) are all it takes to look fantastic.

It was also a lovely reminder of my trip to Paris with my mum almost 7 years ago. Hard to believe it was so long ago but we had an amazing trip that I will always treasure. I hope one day, if I am ever lucky enough to have a daughter, we can have a similar adventure together and she will be as proud of me as I am of my mum.

I am grateful that after a long day the man I love is at home waiting for me. That I got a message from my Mum just to say hi and that the pizza delivery guy is on his way here with my dinner.

Not very interesting perhaps but still that's what I am grateful for today.

So I may not be famous, but sometimes I think we can all appreciate where Brittney is coming from with this song. I have had one of those days where it feels like everyone wants a piece of me and there is only so much to go around.

Boss, assistants, speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, members, volunteers, delegates, venues, suppliers ... the list goes on. I want to help them all but there are only so many hours in a day and so much to do.

Have to be glad for home time. I may be working but at least at home all that is needed of me is to feed the cat and talk to my man.

Piece of me, Ms Brittney Spears

I'm Mrs. Lifestyles of the rich and famous
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Oh my God that Britney's Shameless
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Extra! Extra! this just in
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. she's too big now she's too thin
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Miss American Dream since I was 17
Don't matter if I step on the scene
Or sneak away to the Philippines
They're still gonna put pictures of my derriere in the magazine
You want a piece of me?
You want a piece of me...
You want a piece of me?
I'm Mrs. Lifestyles of the rich and famous
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Oh my God that Britney's Shameless
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Extra! Extra! this just in
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. she's too big now she's too thin
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Lifestyles of the rich and famous
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Oh my God that Britney's Shameless
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. Extra! Extra! this just in
(You want a piece of me)
I'm Mrs. she's too big now she's too thin
(You want a piece of me)
Oh yeah
You want a piece of me

A gorgeous smile goodbye this morning, red roses sent to the office, dinner and intellectually stimulating conversation. All good but best bit was leaving work on time to be with my valentine.

Love you baby!

It is so wonderful that even if I do have to work all day Sunday that I can do it at home with Richard. I have a gorgeous iMac which I just love and its great to work on.

Once again I am grateful for the chance to just sit and talk to Richard. Lunch at Wild Sage in Cammeray and then home to hang out.

He also introduced me to a new game. Minecraft is actually a pretty good game. When we got the multiple player working that was event better. Richard went off to do the dangerous things where a character can get killed and I stayed and decorated our castle.

Good day

I am grateful that I live in a world where someone can send me something that makes me smile.

Today I am loving the outtakes in the littlest Darth Vader advert. Its so cute and I can totally imagine my kids (when I have them) doing something like this.

Laughter really is the best medicine.

To be having a bad day and to have someone to share a laugh with - either at the end or as light relief during the day is something to be grateful for.

This is such a great song to sing at the top of your lungs! No matter who is upsetting you - past lover, work colleague, client - singing always helps clear my head of any negative emotion. Even more so when you can belt it out.

Listen to Adele's Rolling in the Deep - you'll be glad you did

Monday 7 Feb 2011

I am so very Aussie, but today I have to be grateful for a cool change. The heat wave last week has just been way too much so to finally have a cool breeze that helps us all sleep is much needed and appreciated.

Pity its meant to start heating up again tomorrow.

6 Feb 2011

Once again my Richard is what I am most grateful for today.

This time its because he, like the knight in shining armour that he is, came to my conference delegate handbooks rescue. The designer we had to work on the project has done a great job with the look of Conference. Unfortunately, when it came to preparing and sending the delegate handbook off to printing the process has not been seamless. Luckily as Richard is also a designer, he was able to help me both fix the mistakes still in the handbook but also to make sure we sent it to my amazing printers.

Props here to them both for helping Holz Media for the design rescue and Print National for their patience and the amazing job that they always do.

PS: I am changing my titles as I am already confused about what day it is.

Day 34 of 365

Boy is it hot in the city tonight! Though not as bad as it has been or is likely to be this weekend. All one can do is be grateful for an airconditioner that works, fans to blow a breeze on you and a office where maxi dresses rule!

Thanks SMH for helping me decide to sleep in and hide tomorrow

Day 33 of 365

With more bad weather headed Queensland way, today I have to be grateful that my family are safe in NSW. I feel awful for Queenslanders thinking that once again the state is to be hit by a natural diaster.

It does not help that here in Sydney we are melting with what they are predicting could be one of the worst heat waves since they started keeping weather records Down Under.

"Up Over" there are snow storms a plenty and some really dreadful weather ... hmmmm Mayan's you may be on to something

Day 32 of 365

Today for the first time in almost 2 years I drove the car. This is a big deal. The last time I drove I was ill and the GPS lady kept screaming at me "perform a U-turn"! It was traumatic and its taken me a while to get the confidence up to drive again.
What I am grateful for is not so much that my guardian angels had so obviously cleared a path for me (thanks team) but that when I wanted to celebrate I had parents and a partner to celebrate with.

Mum and Dad understood what it meant to me and were excited, even if it is kind of lame. Their praise was of the top level - you know, those parents who scream from the sidelines, even if they have no idea if their kid did good just knowing that it was what they needed. How lucky I am!

To then come inside to find a man who is just as excited makes me feel very, very blessed
